Pictures really do not do the Z8 justice. I saw the Z8 at the Los Angeles Auto Show in 2000 or 2001, and it was, and still is, one of the most beautiful cars I've ever seen.

I have too, but with fewer miles.
Aug 13, 2026 · 17:15
I don’t know what the reserve was but the $240k that were bid were a pretty decent offer in this market environment…
Aug 13, 2026 · 17:14
$100k premium for this color is not unheard of. I've seen this version go for over $300k in the past!

In silver, this is $150 - $160k car given the mileage. Therefore, seller looking for about a $100k premium for color. Buyer's choice.

Beautiful Z8! We saw this car in person a few years ago when purchasing another car from the owner, and this Z8 is a top example. Excellent car, meticulous owner, and great seller. Hard to ask for a better combination.

And to keep the ball rolling on updates for this fantastic Z8, we wanted to provide paint meter readings across the entire exterior. We meant to get these posted earlier, so thank you for your patience.
The readings are very encouraging and appear consistent with factory paint depth throughout the car. Beyond the numbers, the paint itself presents incredibly well, with a soft, smooth finish and excellent luster.
We’ll be posting two series of photos documenting the readings so you can get a comprehensive look around the entire car.
If there’s a particular panel or area you’d like us to meter again or photograph in greater detail, please let us know before the end of the auction. We’re right here with the Z8 and happy to help!

And since we're heading into the final day of the auction, we also wanted to highlight something truly extraordinary...
The seller is including an extensive BMW Z8 archive collection that has been assembled over decades. We've attached the complete inventory along with additional photos. It is an incredible collection that would be extremely difficult - if not impossible - to duplicate today.
Highlights include original Z8 posters, factory press kits, magazines, dealership literature, BMW promotional material, factory training publications, a factory car cover, BMW Performance Center jacket, Z8 helmet, scale models, books, memorabilia, club items, and even the exceptionally rare BMW Z8 leather sample book.
For the next caretaker, this isn't just the purchase of an exceptional BMW Z8—it's the opportunity to acquire decades of thoughtfully curated history and memorabilia from one of the marque's most passionate enthusiasts. We truly don't expect to see another offering quite like this anytime soon.
Aug 12, 2026 · 19:06
@dino70089 – You are correct! The "CV Z8" license plates are included with the sale, and yes—they're a nod to Carmel Valley. We thought they were a fun touch and fit perfectly with all of the social media and Monterey Car Week content we've created around this car.

As Monterey Car Week officially gets underway, we wanted to welcome everyone back to the auction and highlight a few things that make this BMW Z8 such a special example.
This very car was selected for display at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering as part of BMW's 100th Anniversary "Evolution of the Supercar" exhibition—an invitation that speaks not only to the significance of the Z8 as a model, but also to the quality and presentation of this particular example.
The current owner has been an automotive enthusiast and collector since 1971, with a collection that has included Porsche 356s, Porsche Spyders, and Ferraris. For more than four decades, he has also been an active collector and dealer of automotive memorabilia, participating in prestigious events including the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, The Quail, and Porsche Club of America Parades. His photography and writing have been featured in Magneto, Cavallino, 356 Registry, and Automobilia Resource.
It's this level of stewardship that drew us to the car. The thoughtful ownership, extensive documentation, and consistent care are exactly what we hope to find when representing an important collector automobile.
If you're in Monterey for Car Week, the Z8 is available to be viewed in person at our showroom. We'd be happy to answer any questions, arrange a private viewing, or simply talk cars.
We look forward to a great finish to the auction and appreciate everyone following along.

The interior of the headlights is silver, so photos shot at almost any angle will bring up that color, making one think the cover is clouded. It is not on this car, as it would have been attended to long ago.

@mk31755 - Just to follow up, yes, we can confirm the radio is functioning as it should. We tested it again today and recorded a video so you can see and hear it in operation.
Please check out the link below, and as always, let us know if you have any additional questions. Thanks!

As I discovered a few years ago, BMW no longer sells painted interior parts. So if you have Topaz interior parts, you get primed black parts that have to be painted. All such parts come in just one color...primed Black. They clearly got tired of holding stock of these parts in all the various interior colors. For me this meant getting painted the seat side trims, seat backs, center console `tray' piece. My seat side trim pieces were cracked, the others just very scratched up.
Aug 7, 2026 · 05:37
@Mohrimports The cell phone came with every Z8,it was not an option. Someone just kept it as a souvenir. If you look at the window sticker it's listed under 'comfort and convenience'. There were no real options on a Z8, every Z8 came with a hardtop and stand, hardtop cover ,tonneau cover and bag, wind blocker and bag,cup holder, tool kit, first aid kit, battery charger, car cover, cloth to put over soft top window when lowering it, coffee table book with copy of vin tag attached. I probably missed something but all were included in the MSRP price. You basically just ordered exterior and interior colors. Collectors look to have all those items when buying a Z8 but one of the biggest are rare color combos such as your car with 37 examples made!

@borpsmobile love the story, and I can confirm your price point; in fact, I can go a little lower when still living in the UK.
I bought a black with black and red 2000 Z8 for 45k (UK pounds) in 2003. Moved to the US in 2005 and sold that Z8 in the UK (didn't realise I could have brought it here) and walked into Park Place Motors here in Bellevue, WA and purchased a Topaz with Black, 12k miles for $90k, that was full retail.
Loved that Topaz car, but did a deal on an important classic and the seller insisted on the Topaz Z8 in trade. I thought ok, won't be hard to get another; eventually found a standard silver-black car with 14k miles in CA for $82,500. That was not a good car; literally every known fault it ended up having- you name it, and it happened: Vanos, shrunken dash, strings on soft top, etc.
One day, West Coast BMW dealer is in my warehouse, sees the car and asks if I would sell, I said sure but it has some needs, he was "no problem as a dealer; I can have it all dealt with in-house." sold it to him at cost and went looking again ...............market ran away and I never got back in.
One day I will, but it's so hard to pay up when you have owned and sold at less than half current numbers

We've also attached several additional close-up photos of both door pockets to better illustrate their condition. There are some more significant scratches on the passenger-side door pocket, and we did our best to highlight these in the original gallery before the auction. The additional photos should provide an even clearer representation of what is present.
We've also included a close-up of the small crack in the driver's seat trim, which is another common age-related issue seen on many BMW Z8s.
Overall, these cosmetic imperfections are localized and could be addressed by a qualified interior specialist with proper color matching, should the next owner choose to do so. We hope the additional photos help everyone better evaluate the condition.
Aug 6, 2026 · 23:27
We also spoke with the seller regarding the headliners. Both the soft top and hardtop headliners are to be original. We shared photos of the soft top headliner in the gallery (Images #276-278) and with the hardtop currently installed, we've now added detailed photos of that as well.
It presents bright and clean with no staining, though there is some minor separation of the headliner material caused by aging adhesive. This is a common age-related characteristic on these cars and, fortunately, is not visible from the driver's seat.

Welcome back, everyone! We're here with another update on this beautiful 2001 BMW Z8, and we'd like to address a couple of great questions from @ZR1ZR1ZR1 and @mk31755
Yes, the original black BMW trickle charger kit is included with the car, and we've attached an additional photo for reference. This Z8 was not optioned with the BMW cell phone, although the factory mounting location remains in the center console.
Regarding the headlights, they are believed to be original and do show some light signs of age, which is very typical for Z8s. We've added several close-up photos taken today to provide a more accurate, in-person representation of their condition.

The best color combination on the Z8. Hardly ever see blue Z8s for sale anymore.
Aug 5, 2026 · 00:03
Trickle charger has its own soft case. Of course the radio and CD player work. All headliners are original. Headlights are just fine; they are original, and what you're seeing may be in the photography. The car was not delivered with a cell phone.
Aug 4, 2026 · 23:02
I'll answer that just to set your mind at ease....but let's not get off subject, any further. The purpose was so that each item got individual attention and no point would be missed by jumbling them all together.

@dino70089 you probably haven't seen a stratus/sport red in person which is understandable since there are only 2 in the US.
You say you have a silver/burgundy, did you have it reupholstered in that color as there are no records of that combo coming from the factory?
Sorry for the OT seller. Back to bidding this up!

Aug 4, 2026 · 20:41
@ZR1ZR1ZR1 For me Stratus + Red is not a good combo. Stratus + Crema would be my preference, but I'm very happy with my Red/Crema 2001 I bought here. I should also point out that I have a silver with burgundy interior, but the Z8 bright red interior isn't my style. Colors and particularly color combinations is such a personal thing.
Aug 4, 2026 · 20:27
The window sticker does not list the phone. First aid kit is in the trunk, under the cover, along with the tool kit. BMW trickle charger, which plugs into the cigarette lighter is included.
The BMW Z8 club, in the US, confirmed that this was one of only 6 or 7 that was the color combo with the Black soft top; all others were tan.
Aug 4, 2026 · 20:11
@mohrimports. Do you have pics of the hardtop headliner?

I bought a red car at the end of 2000. Getting a car, any car, was not an easy proposition. In my mind, I was good with anything not silver or black.
I had an opportunity to get Topaz, but held back as so many of my other toys were blue.
I regret that decision.

@spyderman2 "The car is said to have remained with the original owner until the current owner’s 2005 purchase, and they have added approximately 25k of the 27k miles."
Aug 3, 2026 · 14:54
While not noted in the text, this is a two-owner example; the second owner since 2005, with just over 1700 miles at that time. Consistently driven throughout the ownership and professionally maintained/serviced.

What's interesting is that although Red and Stratus Grey were produced in lower numbers (291, 196 respectively), Topaz Blue reigns in valuation.
Aug 1, 2026 · 05:12
@Dave_Car_Guy But this car is Crema/Black...so only 37 built. I personally prefer the straight up Crema.

This Z8 is Topaz Blue Metallic magic. Sensational specimen, seriously cool, super rare, AND the @seller is stellar - GLWTA!
Jul 31, 2026 · 21:37
@NicklesVon History would show we're only 1/3 of the way there for this color.
Jul 31, 2026 · 20:01
I think general consensus would show that in terms of Z8 exterior color desirability it would be Topaz Blue by a wide margin, followed by either Red or Stratus Grey, then Black and then Silver.
Jul 31, 2026 · 10:10
@NicklesVon: Yup, as discussed in prior auctions, the vast majority of Z8s were Silver or Black. Only an estimated 319 in the US are Topaz Blue, of which 138 had the Crema interior. Fantastic combo!
